Cleaning a painting and restoring a painting should be done professionally by someone with extensive experience in painting.

An old and dirty painting will regain its former allure after restoration or cleaning and will last for years to come

Even een inkijkje herstellen en of schoonmaken van een schilderij.
Voor dat ik begin met het eigenlijke herstellen of schoonmaken van een schilderij doe ik aan de kant van het schilderij een proefje om te kunnen vaststellen welk reinigingsmiddel ik ga gebruiken om een vuilaanslag of een vuile vernislaag ga verwijderen.
Zit er scheur in het doek dan bekijk ik hoe de vorm van de scheur is en hoe ik na het dichten van de scheur het schilderij aan de voorzijde ga herstellen.
Het kan ook zijn dat het schilderdoek heel dun is geworden en dan moet er een nieuw doek achter om het schilderij weer body te geven.

Werkwijze.
Schoonmaken schilderij.
Met het gekozen middel ga ik voorzichtig de vuile laag verwijderen , dit gebeurd met een niet pluizende doek of wattenstaafje.
Is het doek schoon dan zet ik het meestal in de terpentijnolie en laat dit goed drogen.
Is het schilderij droog dan vernis ik het en de klus is klaar.

Herstellen van het doek.
Op de achterzijde van het schilderij plak ik een stukje schilderdoek en pers ik dan de scheur zodat de scheur goed kan worden opgevuld met een pasta die goed vullend is
Daarna wordt er een retouch op de voorzijde van het schilderij gemaakt en zo de afbeelding weer als vanouds maakt.
Tot slot nog even een verse vernis om de opdracht af te handelen.

Het verdoeken van een schilderij.
Dit is een heel specialistische werk en hier komen veel handelingen aan te pas.
Dit type herstel doe ik meestal in overleg met meer kenners en is een vrij kostbare reparatie.
Maar het is wel mogelijk.

What happens after your application.

Shortly after the application, the gallery will contact the applicant.
We then plan a visit to the gallery's studio, during which a first inspection is made and a plan of action discussed.
As proof of issue, you will be given a collection form signed by both parties.
Besides the general details, we also report a price indication, however, this is a rough indication.
Important, the intake form is no quotation and the amount may differ from the rough indication.

We then make an offer based on the first inspection.
The quotation will state the amount to be paid, work, delivery time and date of the quotation.
If you agree to the quote then the job can be done.
Once the order is done, we will notify you and agree on a pick-up date.
On completion, payment for the work then follows.
Importantly, should the cleaning or repair not be done as per the quotation, the applicant will not be liable for payment.

Remark.
We may need to consult an expert to ensure proper treatment takes place.
If so, we will mention this in the quotation.
An expert may advise us not to accept the job, this because there is a high risk of damage when cleaning or restoring.
If this is the advice then we will waive the order.
We will then charge e.v.t. costs we incurred for the expert's advice.
Of course, we will then provide you with the expert's advice or recommendations so you can get on with cleaning or restoring your painting.

When to consult an expert.
In the case of very expensive paintings from 1700 or a later period.
If a surface is very poor and the paint is flaking.
Strange spots on the surface of a painting
In case of large irregular tears in the canvas.
The varnish is very yellowed and there is a thick layer of varnish in the painting.
If a cloth has become very thin and needs to be caked

We consult an expert if a second opinion is needed to make a good plan.
In the vast majority of assignments, this is not necessary.
